Surfers run towards Hurricane Earl while locals run away

Surfers run towards Hurricane Earl while locals run away

This has to be one of the strangest things I have ever read. According to The New York Times, people in Outer Banks region of North Carolina are doing their best to stay away from Hurricane Earl and its potentially devastating effects. However, one group of people is running towards the hurricane instead of running away. Those people are surfers.

Surfers at Mansboro stayed behind on the beach while everyone else hightailed it out of there. The surfers say that the hurricane action is the “prime time” for their sport, as the hurricane brings forth larger than normal waves. Obviously, large waves are essential to surfing, as the bigger the waves are, the more fun it reportedly is.

I have to take a moment and question the sanity of these individuals. They do not seem to realize that a massive hurricane is coming, and that they should be engaging in a safer activity (like not surfing, for example). All they seem interested in doing is catching some big waves. Little do they know that these surfing under these conditions could be potentially fatal. Many of them have years of experience in this often dangerous sport, but even experienced riders should stay away from the storm.

Now, I can understand that these courageous wave riders want to have some fun. Normally, there is nothing wrong with that. However, if you add Hurricane Earl to the picture, then there is indeed something wrong with it. I strongly believe they should relegate their surfboards to their respective garages for a little while, if they know what’s good for them. I don’t want to wake up the day after Labour Day weekend to headlines like “25 surfers perish in hurricane”. Their desire to surf during a hurricane is absolutely insane, and shows that thy value their sport over their lives.

Allow me to put this in a language that your average surfer might understand.

Hey, dudes and dudettes. Like, I totally think you need to chill out for a bit. Surfing in a hurricane is totally not cool, man. Yeah, the waves are totally awesome and all, but they may be too awesome for you. If you go surfing, you’ll hit a huge wipeout, and there’s, like, no coming back from that one, man.  So, like, take a break for a few days, okay? It’ll be totally gnarly.
